A pavilion, or garden house, generally has two main significations.

Relax in a Free Standing Pavilion

Pavilion may refer to a free-standing structure sited a short distance from a main residence, whose architecture makes it an object of pleasure. Large or small, there is usually a connection with relaxation and pleasure in its intended use.

A pavilion built to take advantage of a view is referred to as a Gazebo. Such garden structures are often used as places of peace and quiet, for example, an office or library as they can be securely locked but, especially in the summer provide a warm, calm atmosphere in which to work.

In the 18th century such buildings were associated with the Italian casina, which translates to English as casino and were set up to resemble small classical temples.

By contrast a free-standing pavilion could also be a far larger building, such as the Royal Pavilion (situated in Brighton), which is a large oriental-styled palace. However, like the other types of pavilion the common factor is that it was built for pleasure and relaxation.

Summerhouses are generally built of wood to look like large sheds, which makes them part of the Garden Furniture, purposefully created so as to add to the effect of being in theme with a garden.

Most often summerhouses must be built and you can employ contractors do this quite easily although you can take on the project yourself, but unlike building a shed, the scale of summerhouses is much greater and more care and attention and man-power is likely needed.

Summerhouses often have many of the same amenities as a house would, such as heating, plumbing and most importantly electricity.

It is worth hiring an electrician to do the electricity unless you have a sound knowledge of the field because it can be very dangerous running electricity cables out to a summerhouse and hiding them as well as possible so that people do not trip over them.

This is the same with plumbing and, if you are thinking of installing proper heating (not portable heaters) you should hire somebody to do this for you as the dangers are great.

Once you have everything installed the summerhouse can become an extension of your house with a more relaxed air and comfortable environment. There are many different uses for the room, including an office, an extra bedroom, or just a place to store junk.
